Table 7: Drug-Analgesic interactions

Drug interactions with local anaesthetics

  • drugs competing for plasma cholinesterases, phenobarbitone, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, tricyclic antidepressives and antiarrhythmic agents

Drug interactions with NSAIDs

  • Most relate to the antiplatelet and gastrointestinal effects. Oral anticoagulants, tricyclic antidepressives, phenytoin, beta-blockers, and the ACE inhibitor captopril

Drug interactions with opioids

  • Morphine: tricyclic antidepressives, metoclopramide, H2-blockers. Pethidine/meperidine: H2-blockers, barbiturates, phenothiazines, MAOIs, phenytoin. Methadone: tricyclic antidepressives, diazepam, anticonvulsants.
