Guidance Notes for first time users

The following notes are intended as general guidelines for first time visitors, describing specific features of this web site. If you have a question which is not covered here, please contact us via the feedback form.

* Recommended web browsers   * Graphics
* Selecting articles   * HyperText links
* Article format   * Printing Update

Recommended web browsers
Articles from Update are available in HTML format for reading online. Although not essential, it is recommended that you use a web browser capable of displaying graphics and tables to make full use of the material available. Examples of such browsers include Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which are available free of charge for non-commercial use. It is possible to view the articles online with a text only browser such as Lynx, and this may be preferred if your network connection is slow. [Back to Top]

Selecting Articles
Articles from Update can be browsed online, with full text & graphics. Two indices are provided for article selection, the:

* Issue Index, where articles are grouped by issue number, and the
* Section Index, where they are grouped by content.

Articles from Update in Anaesthesia can also be searched by Keyword, or downloaded as PDF file for printing with the Adobe Acrobat reader. [Back to Top]

Article Format
At the top of each article is a banner similar to the one shown below:

PRACTICAL PROCEDURES [Next Article][Issue Index][Home Page][Previous Article]

Issue 6 (1996) Article 2: Page 1 of 6   Go to page: 1 2 3 4 5 6

The section under which the article is classified is shown on the left. Other articles of this type are grouped together in the Section Index.

Adjacent to this classification are the Next and Previous Article buttons, which enable you to browse through all of the online articles without having to return to the index pages. For example, to browse through the latest edition, you would select the editorial for Update 6 from the Issue Index, then browse through the journal by clicking on the next article button. Buttons to jump to the Issue Index or back to the Home Page are also available in the banner.

The second line contains details of the issue number from which the article is taken, and the number of pages it contains. Additional links are provided for jumping to individual pages of multi-page articles.

Below the header is a Table of Contents, similar to the one used for this help page. This enables you to jump to specific areas of an article for reference purposes. You can return to the table by using either the Back button built in to your web browser, or by clicking on the [Top] icon which appears at the end of the reference text.

A standard footer is present at the end of each page, an example of which is shown below:

  [Next Page]

If the article is split over several pages, then the Next Page button will be shown. If it is the last page of an article, or the article is only one page long, this will be replaced with a Next Article button. [Back to Top]

Graphics
Thumbnails of an article's graphics are provided embedded within the text. A double sized version of each picture may be viewed by clicking on the required thumbnail. You can return to the article text by clicking on either the full sized graphic or the Back to Article button. Note: Both of these methods require JavaScript. If your browser does not support this scripting language, then use the Back button of your web browser. [Back to Top]

HyperText Links
Articles often contain hypertext links to other pages of information. These links are preceded by an icon which describes the type of material available:

*INFO* This indicates that the link is to another page which describes an item or procedure in greater detail. If you select this link, you can return to the original article text by clicking on the Back to Article button if your web browser supports JavaScript, or alternatively use the Back button built in to your web browser.

*PDF* This indicates that the link is to download an Adobe Acrobat PDF file of a specific item, which can be printed locally. These links are used for flow charts or forms which may be used at the reader's hospital.

*BACK* This icon indicates that the link refers to another article in a previous issue of Update. If you follow one of these links, you will have to use the Back button of your web browser to return to the original article.

Note: It is not necessary to visit the above hypertext links when they are first encountered within the article text. All embedded links are listed again at the end of the article, and may be accessed from there once you have completed reading the article text. [Back to Top]

Printing Update
Each issue of Update is also available for downloading in the Adobe Acrobat format. These files can be used to print multiple copies of Update for local distribution, or to print a specific article. The issues and reader application can be obtained from the Download Update page. [Back to Top]
