Using a multimodal imaging approach a new area of research has been launched linking the NDA with FMRIB. States of consciousness are being manipulated using anaesthetic agents and then probed with sensory and cognitive tasks while EEG and fMRI data is collected simultaneously. We are aiming to develop better biomarkers of brain ‘responsiveness’ for translation to anaesthetic practice and intensive care. The work will be extended to include collaborations with the sleep group in the NLO.
